How to Start Learning Blender in 2026

A practical route from opening Blender for the first time to finishing projects that actually teach you something.

Blender can feel overwhelming because it combines modeling, sculpting, materials, lighting, rendering, animation, compositing and many other disciplines in one application. The fastest way to make progress is not to learn every button. It is to build a small set of fundamentals and repeatedly apply them to complete projects.

1. Learn navigation and object basics first

Start with viewport navigation, transforms, selection, Object Mode and Edit Mode. Learn how meshes are structured and how vertices, edges and faces relate to each other. This sounds basic, but it removes a huge amount of friction later.

2. Build a small modeling toolkit

You do not need dozens of techniques at the beginning. Focus on extrusion, inset, loop cuts, bevels and a few modifiers such as Mirror, Array, Solidify and Subdivision Surface. The goal is to understand what each tool is useful for, not to memorize where it lives in the interface.

3. Learn materials, light and camera early

A simple model can look convincing with good presentation, while a technically complex model can look weak with poor lighting. Learn the Principled BSDF, basic texture mapping, a three-point lighting idea and how focal length changes the image. This connects technical work with visual results.

4. Finish projects instead of collecting tutorials

Tutorials are useful when they solve a problem you are currently facing. They become less useful when you only repeat steps without understanding the decisions. Choose projects that are slightly above your current level, finish them, then review what slowed you down.

5. Ask for feedback earlier

One of the biggest advantages of Blender mentoring is that a mentor can spot structural problems that are difficult to see yourself: weak topology choices, an inefficient workflow, a composition issue or simply an unrealistic scope. A short correction can save many hours of practicing the wrong thing.

6. Create a learning loop

A strong loop is simple: choose a small goal, build something, identify what you cannot solve, learn that specific topic, finish the project and write down what you would do differently next time. After several loops, your knowledge becomes connected rather than fragmented.

What should your first projects be?

Start with objects and scenes where you can clearly judge the result. A simple prop, a stylized room corner, a small architectural element or a compact environment study is often better than an enormous cinematic scene. Smaller scope creates more finished work, and finished work creates faster feedback.
